Based in Manchester, Charles is Chief Executive for the Caribbean & African Health Network, (CAHN) a Black health organisation working to reduce health inequalities and wider inequalities in his community.

People’s Health Trust has supported CAHN as part of Active Communities and currently through Homes for Health.

This podcast was produced by Health Equals in collaboration with the Empathy Museum as part of A Mile in My Shoes. It gathers stories from those dedicated to supporting communities facing challenges such as inadequate housing, air pollution, and hunger. Originally an immersive experience allowing people to literally step into the shoes of those working on the frontlines of health, housing, the education system and more; the experience is now re-imagined for digital audiences.

There is a historic lack of engagement with, and lack of a sense of value for, our [Afro-Caribbean] people. When you begin to address the historic issues and then ask, okay, is there a faith that is in the way or cultural norms and belief that we need to talk about. It makes huge amounts of difference in healthcare.”

“I’ve lived the reality of poverty, worrying about basic needs. Now, I’m determined to give back to my community, helping others live healthier, happier lives. Being part of Mile in My Shoes is an opportunity to show the humanity behind the struggles and to encourage people to step into these stories with an open heart and mind.”
